(St. Catharines, ON) The Professional Hockey Players' Association is proud to announce the AHL recipient of the inaugural PHPA Booster Club of the Year Award. The Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins Booster Club (WBSPBC) has been selected by a panel of PHPA representatives, for their hard work and dedication throughout the 2004-05 season.

Booster Clubs are more than dedicated hockey fans; they are community-oriented citizens with a passion for the game of hockey, and for helping others. The PHPA Booster Club of the Year Award was created to recognize the contributions of these Clubs, and more specifically, the Club who went the extra mile to assist our Members and the communities they live in.

This season the WBSPBC went that extra mile for their team, and even further in the community. Throughout the year this Club organized and/or participated in a plethora of initiatives to assist their team and community. Their array of activities included: creating welcome packages; baking/cooking for road trips; furnishing the team with items for the dressing room; putting together scrapbooks, awards, and other types of keepsakes; hosting banquets, luncheons, and award ceremonies; taking part in a variety of community functions; donating money to a number of charities, and the list goes on. Their commitment to enhancing and supporting the community is truly admirable.

PHPA Director of Communications & Business Development, Andrew Johnston recently attended the 2005 AHL Booster Clubs Convention to present the WBSPBC with this award. Accepted by the Club President, Ed Drozdowski, the award included a commemorative crystal plaque, in addition to a variety of PHPA merchandise. Marking the 41st Annual AHLBCC, over 230 members from 27 booster clubs were in attendance representing past and present American Hockey League teams. Boosters from as far away as Halifax, Nova Scotia, Saint John, New Brunswick, Peoria and Chicago, Illinois and Lexington Kentucky were in attendance. Thousands of dollars were raised over the weekend to be split between the host club's charity, McMaster's Children's Hospital and the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund.

The PHPA thanks all Booster Clubs who submitted entries this season. For more information about the PHPA Booster Club of the Year Award, please visit the Fan Zone located at PHPA.com.

Negotiating Committees from both the Central Hockey League (CHL) and the Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA) met on October 8th and 9th, 2008 in Denver, CO and through productive meetings were able to reach several transitional agreements on a number of items.

The Central Hockey League has recently agreed to meet PHPA representatives in Denver, CO on Wednesday, October 8th and Thursday, October 9th in an effort to advance collective bargaining negotiations.

The Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA) announced today that they have declared a strike, effective immediately, against the Central Hockey League (CHL). This action comes after the League’s meaningless deadlines, broken promises, and hollow resources, which have all contributed to unproductive collective bargaining.

The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of Florida Everblades co-owner Thomas Thewes, who died Sunday at the age of 76 following a two-year battle with Leukemia.
