PHPA Announces Plans to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

(Niagara Falls, ON) The Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA) is pleased to announce it will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary during the 2017-18 season. 

The announcement was made during the 2017 American Hockey League All-Star Classic in Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania where the Association also unveiled its 50th Anniversary logo.  The logo, designed by M Style Marketing, includes key foundational words ‘Strength – Unity – Prosperity’ that form a solid foundation for which the Association has proudly stood.  The player mark from the current PHPA Primary logo is encompassed within the ‘0’ to symbolize the players who have not only been represented and protected by the PHPA over the past 50 years, but who have helped build the Association over that same time.

The 50th Anniversary celebrations will officially launch this June at the 2017 PHPA Annual Meeting of Player Representatives, where the Association will honor five (5) former PHPA Members who played a prominent role in the development of the Association, representing the era in which they played.  Throughout the year, the PHPA will be hosting a celebrity golf tournament and gala event in Niagara Falls, Ontario, profiled in The Hockey News, and building a custom designed Harley Davidson motorcycle which will be part of a raffle draw where the proceeds will be directed towards Hockey Fights Cancer.  A weekly “50 Moments” social media campaign will highlight significant moments and milestone achievements over the Association’s 50 year history, while directing users to a 50th Anniversary micro site.  Other initiatives and events will be unveiled in the coming months.

“The PHPA would not be where it is today without the sacrifice, fortitude, and dedication from the players, which is why it is crucial we recognize what they have meant for this Association,” said PHPA Executive Director Larry Landon.  “We are proud of the fact we are the only union representing minor league players within a major league sport, and that 90% of current NHL players were represented by the PHPA before advancing to the NHL.  Our 50th Anniversary will be a special celebration as we look to honor the past while embracing the future.”
