During the PHPA Annual Meetings last week, Executive Director Brian Ramsay surprised Bert Villarini by naming him the latest recipient of the Curt Leichner Distinguished Member Award.

Named after Curt Leichner, who helped lead the PHPA from its earliest days as Executive Director from 1967 to 1993, the award is given to people who’ve made a significant impact on advancing professional minor league hockey and supporting the players who make up the game.

As a long-time member of the PHPA Workers’ Compensation Panel of Attorneys – and now Co-Chair – Villarini has been instrumental in supporting players, especially in navigating injuries and challenges over the course of their careers.

“I was really motivated by the chance to help people,” Villarini said. “I’ve always loved professional sports, so working with athletes felt like a natural fit. From the beginning, my focus has always been on the players and helping them however I can.”

He’s previously been named Panel Member of the Year twice, in 1995 and 2014, for his efforts in advocating for injured athletes. The Curt Leichner Award is the latest acknowledgement of his long-standing service to the Association.

PHPA Executive Director Brian Ramsay also spoke to his impact, highlighting not just Bert’s legal expertise, but his role as a trusted advisor and advocate.

“Bert has been so much more than legal counsel,” Ramsay said. “He’s been a trusted voice, a strong advocate, and someone who always puts players first. His integrity and commitment have helped shape the PHPA in a lasting way. This award is about people whose work leaves a legacy, and Bert is exactly that.”

After receiving the award, Villarini said he was humbled by the recognition, especially given the many others who have contributed to the game over the years.

“There are so many people who have given so much to professional hockey,” he said. “To be singled out like this is incredibly humbling. I’m very grateful.”

He added that his motivation hasn’t changed over the years: “It’s always been about the players. The most rewarding part of this work is being able to help people.”
