WORCESTER — Bobby Butler, the former Marlborough High hockey standout who went on to star at the University of New Hampshire, play for an AHL champion, skate more than 100 games in the NHL and represent the United States on the Olympic team in 2018, has announced his retirement from professional hockey.

The 36-year-old Butler, who last season served as captain of the Worcester Railers and played two seasons for the ECHL team, serves as director of hockey operations for the Junior Railers. He was an assistant coach at Holy Cross during the 2021-22 season.

“I’m excited for the next chapter of being there for my family,” Butler said. “I can’t wait to help the young hockey players around the Worcester area enjoy the same experiences I was lucky enough to enjoy my whole life.”

Butler came out of retirement for the Railers in 2021-22 after COVID outbreaks ravaged the Worcester roster. He had a goal and two assists in his first game since 2019, a 5-2 win over Reading on Jan. 2, 2022, at the DCU Center.

“We were thrilled when Bobby decided to join us last season,” Railers coach and general manager Jordan Lavallee-Smotherman said. “He provided much needed leadership and guidance that the young players in our locker room took full advantage of. His presence in the locker room will be missed going forward into this next season.”

In 83 games with the Railers, Butler had 23 goals and 31 assists for 54 points. He collected 38 points (17-21) in 63 games last season. Butler had 49 points (20-29) in 130 NHL games, skating for the Ottawa Senators, New Jersey Devils, Nashville Predators and Florida Panthers.

Butler, who helped Binghamton to an AHL Calder Cup title in 2011, was a three-time AHL All-Star, in 2011, 2013 and 2015.
