The Toledo Walleye have signed veteran John Albert, a forward who also will serve as an assistant coach for the team.

Albert, 32, has played in 339 games in the American Hockey League. The Cleveland native also has played in nine NHL games.

Last season, Albert played for Wichita and Rapid City of the ECHL and finished with five goals, six assists, and 10 penalty minutes over 30 games.

A former sixth-round pick by Atlanta in the 2007 NHL draft, Albert played in nine games for the Winnipeg Jets in 2013-14 and scored a goal.

Albert played at Ohio State University and was a captain for the Buckeyes as a senior in 2010-11.

Walleye coach Dan Watson said Albert will serve as a player/assistant coach. Albert also was a captain for the Manitoba Moose of the AHL in 2015-16.

“His passion for teaching and learning more about the game is impressive,” Watson said. “As a former captain in the AHL, we will look to John for his leadership skills, his ability to sustain, and grow our culture within the locker room, and play a smart two-way game. He is a true professional in every sense of the word and we are fortunate to have him play in Toledo.”

Albert has played in six total seasons in the AHL and posted 72 goals and 98 assists.

In the 2019-20 season, Albert skated for Jacksonville in 44 contests and produced eight goals and 21 assists. He posted career-bests in goals with 28 and points (45) in 63 games for St. John’s in the 2013-14 season.

At Ohio State, Albert posted 20-plus points in each of his four years for the Buckeyes. He surpassed 30 points in each of the last three years.

The Walleye open the 2021-22 season at Kalamazoo on Saturday, Oct. 23. The home opener is set for Saturday, Nov. 6.
