Player Rep Spotlight: Carson Musser (Norfolk Admirals)

Carson Musser is the PHPA Player Representative for the Norfolk Admirals of the ECHL. The Grand Rapids, Michigan native spent four seasons at Bowling Green State University before attending Long Island University for one season. Musser turned pro with the Admirals at the conclusion of his college season in 2022 and has become a key piece of their defense core ever since.

How / why did you become a PHPA Player Representative and what are some of your roles and responsibilities?

I was originally asked if I would be an Alternate to our former representative. One thing led to another, and it turned out I had been around Norfolk the longest of everyone on the team. I was asked if I would be interested in becoming our Player Representative and it seemed like a great opportunity to not only represent my teammates but also learn about the business side of the game of hockey. My main responsibility is being a resource and the first contact for my teammates when questions arise about certain topics.

How did you enjoy attending the PHPA Annual Meeting of Player Representatives? What was your favourite part(s)?

The PHPA Annual Meetings are a great time. I have been fortunate enough to attend two and both times it was a very fun but rewarding experience. Meeting so many current players is awesome and truly reminds you of how small the hockey world is. It is also very educational listening to and socializing with former players to learn about their careers after hockey.

What did you enjoy most about your time at Bowling Green State University and do you have a favorite memory from your experience there?

Too many fun memories to pick just one but graduating with my teammates / best friends / roommates after four awesome and successful years was very special. And I guess that leads me into what I enjoyed the most about my time there. I enjoyed the people the most. The relationships I made with my senior class, teammates above and below me, coaches and people around the program were truly special and something I cherish.

You then played at Long Island University for one season while pursuing a graduate degree. What was your area of study in your graduate program?

Long Island University is a special place as well and I was very fortunate for the opportunity to continue playing and to pursue a master’s degree. I received my master’s in business administration while focusing on finance.

Growing up, who did you look up to and try to model your game after?

I am a huge Detroit Red Wings fan and growing up, I liked to watch Nicklas Lidstrom. I try to model my game after him, but key word there is try!

This is your fourth season with the Norfolk Admirals. What is it about the organization and the team that makes you want to return year after year?

The fans in Norfolk have a special place in their hearts for Admirals hockey. You could still feel that passion even when the team was struggling. The last 3 years and being a part of that turn around has been very special. I want to keep building on that and hopefully bring a championship back to the city.

What’s your favourite thing to do on a night off in Norfolk?

Norfolk and the surrounding area (Virginia Beach) are a very cool spot. Depends on the weather but I like to go to the beach and do things outside.

Who is the funniest teammate you have played with in either college or pro?

College is Sam Craggs. Pro is Danny Katic.

It was noticed you’re a big Detroit Lions fan. Who’s your favourite player and why?

Amon-Ra St. Brown because I think when the Lions win the Super Bowl (fingers crossed) he is going to be Super Bowl MVP.

Favorite pregame meal?

My mom’s homemade baked spaghetti recipe.
